What to Expect

Gynecologic Cancers including cancer of the ovary, endometrium or uterus, cervix and vulva effect thousands of women every year. These types of cancers are treated in a variety of ways so each patient is considered a unique individual with a customized care plan.

Dr. Sharma specializes in treating gynecologic cancers, which often involve performing surgery and administering chemotherapy. In addition, he is an expert in managing abnormal pap smears that often result in precancerous conditions of the cervix or vagina before developing into an invasive cancer. We have the equipment to perform a Colposcopy in the office during your exam, should you need one.

If you are referred to Dr. Sharma by your primary care physician or your obstetrics/gynecology doctor, your appointment will involve discussing your medical history and reason for your visit by his nurse. Dr. Sharma will review your medical history, perform a physical examination, discuss his findings and lay out a potential treatment plan with you. We encourage patients to bring a family member or friend as they desire.

If Dr. Sharma is recommending surgery, our nurse or surgery scheduler will speak to the patient regarding their hospital preference and timing of surgery. The nurse will provide additional information about the pre-operative and post-operative testing and care required. The surgical scheduler will be in contact with the patient once Dr. Sharma's availability is coordinated with the hospital. We have a fast turn around time with scheduling surgical procedures for our patients.

If a patient is going to receive chemotherapy, Dr. Sharma will outline the treatment plan then Peg Gregus, the advanced practice nurse, will go into more detail regarding potential side effects and schedule the treatment.
